Book, Movie, and Music Review Assignments
Grades 5, 7, 8
One way to find out what a book review is, is to read some.
Go to the sites at the end of these directions and read 5 or more book reviews. Be sure you are reading reviews from students in grades 5-12. If you need passwords, Mrs. Flores has them.
Here is one to start with about the book HOLES by a seventeen-year-old student:

Be sure to click your browser's back button to return to http://msedwards.pbwiki.com/bookreviews directions page to follow these directions:
1. After reading one review, write an email to me which you will save as a draft (do not send yet):
a. What is the title of the book and the name of the reviewer?
b. What is the link to the review (copy and paste as I did above)?
c. How many paragraphs did the reviewer write?
d. What ideas did the reviewer include in his/her book review (remember, there will be a different idea in each paragraph)?
e. Did the reviewer convince you to read the book? If yes, how did the reviewer convince you? If no, why didn't the reviewer convince you?
f. What is the date you did this assignment?
2. Save this as a draft. Do not send yet.
3. Repeat steps 1a through 1f and 2 until you have read and answered the above questions for five or more book reviews.
4. After completing the above assignment for five book reviews, do the following in your draft email:
a) write your definition of what a book review should include
b) explain the purpose of a book review
c) think about and explain what a movie review is and what its purpose is
d) think about explain what a music review is and what its purpose is
5. Go to Graphics Factory ( http://members.graphicsfactory.com/w/index.php?page=Login ) and find a picture that represents a book, movie, or music in clip art. Do not use the eChalk gallery. Choose graphics at 72 dpi. Learn how to download, save, and insert the graphics into an email. Do not attach the graphic. Insert the graphic with your editor.
6. After your inserted graphic, explain why you chose that graphic.
7. Send me your email with all five book review responses of 1a-f, your definition/purpose of a book review, your definition/purpose of a movie review, and definition/purpose of a music review, and your inserted graphic representing a book, movie, or music in clip art from Graphics Factory with explanation.
1. How quickly did you complete the assignment? (You will need to use more than your computer time)?
2. How complete is your assignment (all steps 1a-f and step 4 -6) sent all at once unless directed otherwise by Ms. Edwards?
3. How accurately did you define the contents and purpose of book, movie, and music reviews?
4. Did you insert a clip art from Graphics Factory (not eChalk and not attached)?
5. Did you explain why you chose that graphic?
5. How nicely did you style your email for easy reading (including spell-check and punctuation)?
Since you will be reading at least five book reviews, I chose this graphic of a book worm with five books:
